South and Southeast Asian art history and archaeology

Faculty of Humanities/Arts and Archaeology

In Leiden, the chair in archaeology and ancient history of the Netherlands East Indies / Southeast Asia, was founded in 1919. Under the professorship of Nicolaas Krom and Frits Bosch (1919-1957), the study of the archaeology and art history of South Asia remained the special task of Jean-Philippe Vogel who held the chair of Sanskrit. Under the professorship first of Theo Galestin and subsequently Hans de Casparis (1957-1986) the field of study of the chair was extended to include South Asia as well. In 1986, the chair was transferred to the department of Southeast Asia and no longer dedicated to art and archaeology but to the study of Javanese. For the study of South Asian art and archaeology, a temporary ‘personal’ chair was realised from 1995-2002 (held by Karel van Kooij), and an endowed chair for both South and Southeast Asian art from 2010-2013 (occupied by Marijke Klokke).

At the Amsterdam University (UvA), the Institute for South Asian Archaeology was founded by Hanne van Lohuizen-de Leeuw in 1959. After a flourishing period, the institute was closed down in 1988 as was the department of Indian languages. Up to the merger with the Indological Department in Leiden, Utrecht had a small section on South and Central Asian art history. Recently, Groningen created a new position in the field of iconography.
